Inspired by our Total Chaos conference in Sofia earlier this year, SIGGRAPH attendees have the chance to discover how world-class experts use technology to bring their visions to life. The visual architectural design process — KPF

Cobus Bothma, Director Applied Research

A major part of the KPF visualization process is the successful communication of designs internally, as well as with clients and stakeholders. The designers and architects are empowered to create and visualize geometry and data throughout the design process. In this talk, Cobus Bothma will highlight the unique ways KPF makes use of V-Ray in architectural practice, and show how GPU processing has accelerated workflows.

Vlado in Renderland 2019 - Chaos

The landscape of CG is evolving constantly, with recent developments in real-time, cloud and GPUs having huge effects on the future of rendering. In this presentation, Vlado will reveal some of the latest ground-breaking features of Chaos’ V-Ray renderer and give an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview of some of the incredible new technology under construction for future releases. Creating superheroes the V-Ray way — Digital Domain

Deke Kincaid, Pipeline Supervisor

This discussion will include a look at Digital Domain’s latest V-Ray accomplishments on Captain Marvel and Avengers: Infinity War, and reflect on how the renderer has helped the studio over many years and projects. Deke will also divulge the heights they’ve taken V-Ray to in developing in-house toolsets and discuss the challenges and workarounds involved with Maya.

Making caustics mainstream with Corona Renderer 4 — Chaos

3:00 – 4:00 PM, Room 409A

Ondra Karlík, CTO & Main Developer of Corona Renderer

Caustics, such as the curved patterns of light at the bottom of a swimming pool, are a common optical phenomenon — but they’re often rendered inefficiently. Ondra will talk about how caustic rendering was implemented into Corona Renderer version 4, boosting realism of Corona images significantly. He will describe why this effect is so difficult to compute, previous approaches to the problem and how the Corona team overcame obstacles.

Agile workflow tips with V-Ray for Houdini — Ingenuity Studios

Grant Miller, Partner & VFX Supervisor

Ingenuity delivers a variety of VFX to over 50 shows, films and music videos during a typical season. This presentation will cover the workflows the studio deploys to meet deadlines while maintaining quality, including rapid asset development, transfer from Maya to Houdini, and scene assembly using V-Ray for Houdini. Grant will also cover a variety of V-Ray for Houdini tips, including digital assets and attribute-driven shading.

Beyond pretty pictures: using rendering to push the boundaries of full color 3D printed objects — Chaos

Jaroslav Křivánek, Director of Research

Join Jaroslav for a discussion on how the tech used to drive photorealistic renderers such as V-Ray or Corona can be used to achieve super-realistic, color 3D prints. Realistic rendering and full-color 3D printing, though seemingly different, share the same basis: accurate simulation of light behavior — and exploring this observation has allowed Jaroslav and this team to create 3D prints of a much higher visual quality than ever before.

Innovative real-time solutions: where tech, art and film converge - Method Studios

“The Kit” opens up a flexible and creative way of producing top quality content for any deliverable. Maximizing production workflows with real-time toolsets makes speedy iterations possible: creatives are able to evaluate artistic choices instantly and deliver the highest quality in a fraction of the time normally associated with the development tasks. In his presentation, Rus will break down how it works and show how it’s helped out in real-world scenarios.

Kirk Shintani, Art Director & Head of 3D

Over the past decade, Elastic has provided the stirring and tantalizing title sequence for all 73 episodes of HBO’s global fantasy phenomenon, Game of Thrones. Kirk will explain how this relationship came about, the approaches Elastic took to the various series, the clever design decisions they made to create a scale version of Westeros — and how V-Ray has powered the credits since day one. An essential talk for Thronies and VFX fans alike.

Choreographing chaos: the Orville's epic space battle — Pixomondo

Nhat Phong Tran, VFX Supervisor & Daniel Carbo, VFX Producer

Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville has refreshed and reinvented episodic sci-fi TV, with series two culminating in a frantic battle to save Planet Earth from the evil Kaylons. Nhat and Daniel will talk about Pixomondo’s VFX work on the show, including the role that previz played in the process, creating that epic two-part space battle and how they constructed true works of visual art to not only support the narrative and story, but to elevate it.

Albena Ivanova
Direct Sales Director, Chaos

Albena has been working in technology for the last decade, from management roles in the IT industry to her current position at Chaos where she supports the teams directly communicating with V-Ray users — from individuals to enterprise. Albena joined Chaos around two years ago and is passionate about filmmaking, machine learning and education.

Cobus Bothma
Director Applied Research, KPF

Cobus has contributed to the design, computation, analysis and communication of a diverse range of projects at architect firm KPF. One of his recent projects involved managing all the furniture, fittings, equipment and overall 3D dataset of Abu Dhabi International Airport. He is additionally responsible for overseeing new technology development and adoption at KPF.

Daniel Carbo
VFX Producer, Pixomondo

Daniel was the VFX Producer on Solo: A Star Wars Story and is now working on such sci-fi shows as The Orville, Westworld and the Star Trek franchise. Daniel has 16 years of VFX production experience, having worked film like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Green Lantern and the all-female Ghostbusters.

Deke Kincaid
Pipeline Supervisor, Digital Domain

Industry-leading supervisor Deke has 22 years of experience and has made significant contributions to numerous major blockbusters; most recently Captain Marvel, Avengers: End Game and Spider-Man: Homecoming. As an expert in V-Ray, Deke has constantly pushed the boundaries to help create a more powerful and effective pipeline at Digital Domain.

Grant Miller
Partner & VFX Supervisor, Ingenuity Studios

Grant is a Partner and VFX Supervisor at Ingenuity Studios in LA. His credits include the movies Get Out and Geostorm, TV series The Walking Dead and Brooklyn 99, Emmy-winning commercials for Nascar, and Grammy-winning videos for Taylor Swift. His work is divided between onset and post-VFX supervision, streamlining FX methodologies, and developing in-house tools.

Jaroslav Křivánek
Director of Research, Chaos

As well as being responsible for research in Corona Team, Jaroslav is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Charles University in Prague, and a successful researcher. Jaroslav’s hard work and scientific achievements lead to his inclusion in the New Europe 100 list of “outstanding challengers who are leading world-class innovation from Central and Eastern Europe”.

Joy Lea
CG Art Director, ARwall

Joy is the CG Art Director at LA-based AR studio ARwall. Her diverse experience in virtual production and video game design have helped studios adapt to new methods of graphic artistry, digital set design and beyond. Her credits include the Battlefield series, ADR1FT for Oculus, Disney’s live-action Lion King, and the upcoming films Avatar II and Avatar III.

Kat Harris
Technical Designer / Engineer, Magnopus

Kat is Technical Designer and Prototyper at Magnopus in Los Angeles. She focuses on Mixed Reality experiences combining phone, HoloLens, VR and IoT. Kat was the first woman in the world to get the developer certification for Unity! Prior to Magnopus, she worked as a technical designer at Microsoft on Azure Spatial Anchors and the Mixed Reality Toolkit.

Keely Colcleugh
CEO, Kilograph

A designer and VR/AR expert with over 18 years of experience in architecture (Rem Koolhaus, Bruce Mau) and major Hollywood film franchises (Iron Man, Superman Returns), Keely Colcleugh founded Kilograph in 2009. She is a board member at the A+D Museum in LA, a member of the Jury for the Architizer A+ Awards, and President of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI).

Kirk Shintani
Art Director & Head of 3D, Elastic

Over the last 15+ years, Kirk has worked on hundreds of commercials and numerous title sequences including the Emmy Award winning “Game of Thrones” for HBO. Kirk is an Art Director and Head of 3D at the rapidly growing A52/Elastic, helping develop artists both personally and creatively.

Nhat Phong Tran
VFX Supervisor, Pixomondo

Nhat spent the last year supervising Pixomondo’s VFX work on Mary Poppins Returns, Crazy Rich Asians, Fox’s The Orville, Netflix’s Euphoria and CBS’s Star Trek franchises. Last fall, Nhat was nominated for an Emmy award for this work on Westworld and is currently in production on the show’s third season.

Ondra Karlick
CTO & Main Developer of Corona Renderer, Corona

Ondra started in CG as an artist, but switched his focus to programming. In 2009, he started the development of Corona Renderer. The renderer became renowned for its simplicity and speed, and was released commercially in 2015. The company he founded, Render Legion, joined forces with Chaos in 2017.

Rus Brutsche
CG Supervisor, Method Studios

Rus has been in visual effects for over 15 years. After graduating with a Character Animation degree from CalArts, he started his career at Cinesite followed by Rhythm & Hues in Los Angeles. While at R&H, Rus contributed to over 15 movies, starting as a matchmove TD, then into lighting, and eventually a sequence supervisor. He has been at Method Studios for the last four years as a CG Supervisor.

Sarah McGee
Pipeline Manager, Zoic Studios

Sarah is a Pipeline Manager at Zoic Studios, an award-winning visual effects company. With 10 years of experience in visual effects, Sarah manages the development of software tools to help artists and producers perform their jobs more efficiently by speeding up processes or adding new functionality to pre-existing tools.

Sara Mustafa
Management & Global Operations Expert, Pixomondo

Sara joined Pixomondo in 2014 and has since held many positions and given advice on various aspects of management. With experience overseeing projects on a global scale, she ensures smooth operations between Pixomondo’s international offices. Now, as Pixomondo’s Chief Operating Officer, she continues to provide the company with her invaluable expertise.

Vladimir "Vlado" Koylazov
Co-Founder & Head of Software Development, Chaos

Passionate about 3D graphics and programming, Vlado is the driving force behind Chaos’ software solutions. Vlado is an expert in rendering theory and an avid 3D community supporter, often participating in forum discussions to help users solve rendering challenges. In 2017, Vlado received a Sci-Tech Academy Award for V-Ray.
