Exploring the galaxy — Student rendering challenge

Meet the winners

Congratulations to everyone who dared to join us on this intergalactic mission and took part in our Student rendering challenge. The votes from the jury and the public are in - let's give a round of applause of this year's winners. Live long and prosper!

Jury Grand Winner

Artist: Enock Chung
Country: Republic of Korea
Institution: SF Film School
Project name: Roasting marshmallows to deep golden perfection
Project Description: This project has been started from one short YouTube clip. That one inspiring YouTube clip demonstrated how a trained monkey toasts marshmallow with the flame that he made himself with the match just like humans do in front of the bonfire. Which naturally brings up the image of ‘Vacation’. Furthermore, these humorous and amusing materials looked like they would perfectly fit into the 2022 Challenge's topic 'Space Vacation'. Since we all know that chimpanzees have been to space in the past, I Believed there were already strong connections between Apes and space. Thus I've decided to turn such imagination into reality with confidence. I have no doubt that this project was meant for this challenge.

Public Grand Winner / Jury Winner: Most Creative Approach

Artist: Cho Minji
Country: Republic of Korea
Institution: SF Film School
Project name: The pursuit of Carrot
Project Description: Like the movie 'The Pursuit of Happiness', the rabbit goes on vacation to find his 'Happiness' carrot. It's not just a carrot. It's a carrot that grows one light year on a planet that no one in space can reach. Would you like to join us on a rabbit's journey to find the most delicious carrot in the universe?

Jury Winner: Best Lighting

Artist: Joseph Siml
Country: United States
University: The University of Arizona
Project name: Aspirations Reflected
Project Description: Aspirations Reflected is a work depicting the potential of a life hoped for. The gritty, unpolished space vessel stands in stark contrast to the pristine world glimpsed at via the window reflections. The vacationer peering through the window sees the potential this world has to offer, and the better life it represents. Whether he will move towards it or not is open to debate. In this render, I wanted to experiment with window glazing to provide both insight and mystery. The reflective and transparent properties of glass are perfectly suited for this aim. The glass provides an insight into the depth of the ship, while also reflecting only the smallest hints of the world that lies beyond the vessel.

Runner-up

Artist: David Campos
Country: Bolivia
University: Render DC
Project name: Nave Render DC
Project Description: Extraction and exploration of water with ships
Software used: V-Ray for SketchUp

Runner-up

Artist: Andrei-Ionut Zota
Country: Romania
University: Facultatea de Arhitectura si Urbanism Cluj-Napoca
Project name: Seeds of a new home
Project Description:"Imagine you are a little kid and you are the second generation on this new planet. You can benefit from a brand-new place to call, home, somewhere in the galaxy. If you think about the previous generations, they made an enormous effort so that you can freely walk and live on this planet, without any heavy costumes or pieces of equipment. You are lucky!
The image catches the moment when you and your little brother make your first steps in the history of your people from Earth, and you have in front of your eyes the key to life stored in a big container while you are surrounded by nature in the best time of the year, enjoy the little break where you will find out about yourself more than you think ."

Special shout-out

Artist: Xavier Moreau
Country: Canada
University: Laval University
Project name: SPACE TRAVEL - Propaganda
Project Description: With the launch of the spacecraft rocket, we're taking the first steps to expand our existence beyond Earth. The goal: establish a permanent and sustainable presence on the planet Mars. The propaganda holds the first role of this quest. Its main objective is to enroll future astronauts who will lead to the establishment of the Red Planet. The spacecraft will collect important data that will prepare the journey for future space vacationers. Lessons learned while creating a permanent research centre on Mars will be used to guide us toward our future goal of a space vacation development in outer space. This expedition will serve as a testing ground for the innovative technology and ideas that will prepare us for the long haul to Mars.

Special shout-out

Artist: Michael Mayer
Country: Denmark
University: 3D College
Project name: The Houseboat
Project Description: My entry for this rendering challenge is based on my recent vacation, where I spent 10 days in a campervan driving around and hiking in the alps of Switzerland. Though my project isn't a campervan I was fascinated by the idea of having the freedom to go where ever you want and have your home with you. I came up with the idea of a houseboat, which resembles a campervan, but I felt like the boat gave me more of a spaceship look. But what if you could travel in space with a houseboat, and have a piece of the earth with you. That's how I came up with the idea of having a simple garden on the houseboat. To give travelers a feel of home and comfort while on vacation.

Looking for ideas?

When crafting your winning image, think about…

Where will your resort be situated? The moon, Mars, Europa — or a galaxy far, far away? Will they be earthbound, or in orbit around an alien planet?

Which vehicles will we use to get around these new colonies? And what about the technology and products we’ll use in the world of tomorrow?

What will protect your occupants from the hazards of new worlds? What about differing gravitational forces, or arrhythmic days and nights?

When will they be built? Would they be feasible today, or a decade, century, or millennia from now?

Who will live there? Will it be enough for one cosmonaut or an entire planet's worth of people?

How will they be constructed? Will you use readily available building supplies, or mine new and exotic materials?

Get inspired.

We've put the spotlight on some pieces that are bound to inspire your entry.
