Description
The Ormesby Psalter is one of the most splendid yet enigmatic English manuscripts. Written and illuminated in the early fourteenth century to celebrate a marriage which never took place, the book was unfinished by its aristocratic patrons. Yet within its rich borders, a forgotten world comes to life, a cornucopia of comic, bawdy, and fantastic images of scenes from myths and fables, riddles and puzzles designed to intrigue and delight the medieval viewer as they still do today. This study offers new insights into how and why the book was made, and introduces us to the fascinating story behind the creation of one of the masterpieces of English illumination.
